Extreme X-Rays: Photographer Nick Veasey Takes You Inside ... Everything

Not many photographers need a linear accelerator. But Nick Veasey isn't your average shutterbug. Instead of tweaking f-stops and light boxes, he fine-tunes the speed and frequency of energy pulses emitted by a Russian-made tabletop particle turbocharger. That's because Veasey doesn't work with traditional cameras and film — he works with x-rays.

Park(ing) Day 2008

Mark your calendars, September 19th 2008, a mobile public green space could be rollin’ through your hood. The Park(ing) Day is a project aimed at redefining urban space and brining awareness to the need for green in our cities. Temporary public parks will be created by building a green space in ordinary metered spaces or lots. You may also spy the ParkCycle, a human powered mobile unit, brought to us by the San Francisco based group Rebar. The ParkCycle will be on tour for the fourth annual Park(ing) Day making green space available when you want it and where you want it. The group states that they are the only providers of such a commodity and measure their green space contribution in square feet per minute (depending on how long they park it). “What began as a simple, playful idea has become a lively and visible symbol of the desire to reprogram the street and increase public open space in cities all over the planet.”

Wierdest Clip Ever Made

Nokia's teaser site that promised the weirdest clip ever made has just coughed up that video in question, and yeah, it's pretty damn weird. The first puzzle is almost impossible to solve by non-brute force methods if you don't have a Nokia phone, but if you do, it's a matter of watching the video and plugging in the symbols in the correct order. We're still unclear what phone this is teasing for. But if you have a nokia phone knock yourself out and let us know what the greatest secret ever is Open at your own risk

McCarthy Dogshit Work Wreaks Havoc in Switzerland

BERN, Switzerland—Paul McCarthy’s Complex Shit, a giant inflatable dog turd, escaped from its moorings at the Zentrum Paul Klee last week and brought down a power line and broke a window before landing on the grounds of a children’s home 200 meters away, the Guardian reports. Although the unintended flight happened on July 31, details emerged only yesterday.

The McCarthy piece, which is reportedly the size of a house, is part of the exhibition "East of Eden: A Garden Show," which runs through October 26. According to Juri Steiner, the director of the Klee center, the museum was not yet sure if the work would go back on display.

The Spirit

Sexy Alpina D3

In Germany there is a long history of small aftermarket companies that specialize in taking production vehicles from one of the big German automakers and transforming it into something special. That something special usually amounts to taking cars that already have a healthy amount of power and making it an insane amount along with some body modifications and suspension upgrades. AMG (now owned by Mercedes) and Brabus specialize in tuning cars from Stuttgart while Alpina's focus is on BMWs. Alpina's latest effort is based on the 3-Series coupe with propulsion coming from a version of the 2.0L dual turbo diesel in the 123d. The D3 Bi-Turbo gets only a slight bump in power from 204 to 214 hp. Torque however swells from 295 lb-ft to 332 lb-ft. That's good enough for a sub 7 second 0-60 run while still getting a combined 43.6 mpg (US) with CO2 emissions of 143 g/km (all with the manual transmission). Attractive new wheels and lower air dam give the D3 a distinctive appearance from a run of the mill 3-Series as well.

Gamblers with families might start humming "It's a small world after all" if plans for a high-speed maglev train between Disneyland and Las Vegas continues to go forward. The "technical corrections" legislation that was recently passed freed up $42 million from a 2005 transportation bill to go towards an environmental study of the first leg of the project. The train, moving at speeds of up to 310 mph while levitating on a magnetic field, would make short work and a smooth ride of the 4 hours it currently takes to make the trip by car. It's a great sounding idea that could give both tourists destinations a big green boost. That is, it's great until you check out the $12 billion price tag. Yikes! Of course, $12 billion might be ok if it's a financially viable proposition. The Central Japan Railway Co. is spending $45 billion on a shorter run and foregoing government subsidies to do it.

Yacht A

A £200 million super-yacht has set sail on its maiden voyage to Norway, where its Russian billionaire owner stopped off to collect three Claude Monet paintings.

The futuristic vessel, which has enough room to sleep 56, is even bigger and more expensive than the pride of Roman Abramovich's fleet, Pelorus, which cost only £100 million.

It was built for a fellow Russian oligarch, Andrey Melnichenko, 37, who is worth £4.6 billion and was ranked 172 on the Forbes list of the world's richest people.

R.I.P. Bernie Mac

Comedian and Chicago native Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist confirmed.

Mac, 50, had been hospitalized for about a week at Northwestern Hospital, according to his spokeswoman. A few years ago, Mac disclosed that he suffered from sarcoidosis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue, most often in the lungs.

The comic born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough could cut an imposing figure. He stood 6-foot-3, was built like a fullback and carried himself with a bouncer's reticence. But perhaps the strongest weapon in the Chicago comedian's arsenal was that voice, that amalgam of thought and a delivery that could rise like a tidal wave, outpace a Gatling gun and remained, to his last days, loud and unapologetic.

He wasn't scared, he told us time and again, to tell anyone what he thought, to say what others were afraid to say. That fearlessness wasn't always welcome, considering Mac didn't get his big break until his 30s. But when he did, the comic skyrocketed to success in stand-up, television and the big screen.
